How long does a full basement finish take?

Most 1,000–1,500 sq ft basements finish in 6–8 weeks once framing inspection clears. Delays depend on permit timeline and any structural work needed first. We schedule around your contractor availability.

What's included in a basement finish?

Framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, painting, and trim. Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC connections tie to existing systems — those trades may be separate. We'll spell out what's included in the quote.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Any finished basement in St. Louis requires a permit and framing inspection. We handle the application and coordinate inspections — that's built into our timeline.

Can I remodel an older finished basement?

Yes. We assess the existing framing, moisture, and systems first. If walls are sound, we often save time and cost by keeping them and updating surfaces, flooring, and lighting.

What if we find water damage or mold?

We stop, document it, and recommend a moisture specialist before continuing. Mold remediation and waterproofing are separate — we don't hide problems under new drywall.

How much does a remodel cost compared to a new finish?

Remodels typically cost 30–50% less than new framing because walls and structure are already there. Your quote depends on the current condition and what you want to change.

What electrical and plumbing is needed for a bar?

Bars need a dedicated outlet for a cooler or kegerator, possibly a second for lighting, and a drain for a sink. We rough-in the drains and electrical; the plumber and electrician complete final connections.

Do I need a permit for a basement bar?

Not for the bar itself, but if your basement finish requires a permit (which it does), the bar is part of that scope. We include bar framing and construction in our permitting.

How long does a bar take to build?

A 6–8 ft bar in a finished basement typically takes 2–3 weeks once the basement walls and flooring are done. Countertop lead time and sink/drain complexity affect the final schedule.

Can you add a bathroom to a finished basement?

Yes. We frame the walls, run supply and drain rough-ins, and rough-in vent lines. A licensed plumber makes final connections to your main stack and water lines.

How much drain slope and vent height do I need?

Drains need roughly 1/4 inch drop per 1 foot of length toward the stack, and vent pipes must clear the roof. We follow St. Louis code — the plumber's final inspection confirms compliance.

What's the cost difference between a half bath and full bath?

Half baths cost 40–50% less because they skip the shower or tub rough-in, which requires extra framing and larger drain lines. Your quote depends on fixture location and existing wall layout.

How do you know if a wall is load-bearing?

We look at the house frame above — if joists run parallel to the wall and rest on it, it's load-bearing. We also check foundation walls and existing posts. A structural engineer may be needed for complex layouts.

What happens if you remove a load-bearing wall?

The floor above will sag or collapse if not supported by a beam or posts. That's why we assess every wall before removing it and install proper support — all part of the permit process.

Do I need an engineer for a support beam?

For walls supporting significant load, yes — the inspector may require engineer plans. We'll tell you upfront if a professional stamped design is needed; cost depends on complexity.

Why not pour a new concrete floor?

Concrete can crack, heave, and feels cold. A wood or engineered subfloor is warmer, easier to finish with carpet or hardwood, and gives you a clean look — plus easier to run utilities under.

What's the difference between plywood and engineered boards?

Plywood is cheaper and works in most basements; engineered boards handle more moisture. We choose based on your concrete moisture test results and the flooring you want on top.

How do you prevent the subfloor from rotting?

We test concrete moisture first, seal it if needed, install a moisture barrier, and use pressure-treated sleepers or joists. Proper ventilation under the floor is key to long-term durability.

Is hardwood safe in a basement?

Engineered hardwood yes; solid hardwood no. Engineered boards handle moisture swings better and cost less. Either way, a good subfloor, moisture barrier, and humidity control are non-negotiable.

What kind of carpet works best in basements?

Nylon or polyester with a moisture-resistant backing, plus a quality pad underneath. We avoid wool and select carpet that won't hold mold if there's a spill — and we recommend a dehumidifier.

Do I need to worry about the floor feeling cold?

Yes. Concrete conducts cold. A raised subfloor with insulation underneath, plus carpet or engineered wood, warms the space significantly — you'll notice it right away.

Can I extend ductwork from my furnace to the basement?

Often yes, if the furnace has capacity. We assess air flow, add dampers if needed, and may upgrade the system. An HVAC tech verifies sizing before we close walls.

What if my furnace isn't big enough?

A mini-split heat pump or radiant floor panel can heat the basement independently and is often cheaper than upgrading your main furnace. Each has trade-offs on cost and appearance.

Should the basement thermostat be separate?

Yes — basements heat and cool differently than upstairs. A zoned system or separate thermostat prevents you from overheating the main house to warm the basement.
